Academician Tong Xiaolin divides type 2 diabetes into four stages: stagnation, heat, deficiency and debility. When the disease reaches its last two stages, there will occur many complications. In these two stages, the core pathogenesis is insuficient vital qi, deficiency of both yin and yang, accompanied by blood stasis. Its treatment should focus on strengthening vital qi, regulating and tonifying yin and yang, supplemented by promoting blood circulation for removing blood stasis, and treating various complications according to their syndromes. Cassia bark, common macrocarpium fruit and dried fresh ginseng are the three herbs in a minor prescription commonly used by Professor Tong Xiaolin for benefiting and strengthening vital qi, invigorating yin and yang. The three medicines, collectively called Wencui Decoction, can always be used in combination in the late stage of type 2 diabetes with the syndrome of yin and yang deficiency, with the common dosage of cassia bark 3-30 g, common macrocarpium fruit 9-60 g, and dried fresh ginseng 6-30 g.
