Zhou Desheng's Experience of Treating Intractable Hiccup After Stroke
Professor Zhou Desheng believes that the pathogenesis of hiccup after stroke is disturbance in ascending and descending of ,qi, movement, and the treatment must be based on the principle of the ascending and descending of yin and yang for ascending the clearing and descending the turbid. The treatment is mainly to ascend and descend ,qi, movement, lower counterflow of ,qi, with heavy settling medicinals, and potentially reduce the turbidity, and suppress the hyperactivity of yang. The first choice for medication is metal, stone, shellfish, such as Daizheshi (,Haematitum,), Longgu (,Os Draconis,), Muli (,Concha Ostreae,), Shijueming (,Concha Haliotidis,), Zhenzhumu (,Concha Margaritiferae Usta,), etc. If there is disturbance in ,qi, and blood, yin and yang, ascending and descending, if ,qi, movement is not running smoothly, and the blood and body fluid cannot flow smoothly, and they will accumulate and result in the syndrome of blood stasis and phlegm turbidity. Dingxiang (,Flos Caryophylli,), Tanxiang (,Lignum Santali Albi,), Muxiang (,Radix Aucklandiae,), Chuanlianzi (,Fructus Toosendan,), Puhuang (,Pollen Typhae,), Honghua (,Flos Carthami,), Sanleng (,Rhizoma Sparganii,), Ezhu (,Rhizoma Curcumae,), etc. can be used to regulate ,qi, and activate blood circulation. For hiccup with cold syndrome, Clove and Persimmon Decoction can be used for treatment. For hiccup with heat syndrome, that is, the syndrome of ascend ,qi, of stomach fire, Tangerine Peel and Bamboo Shavings Decoction can be used for treatment, and heatclearing drugs can also be combined. For ,qi, stagnation syndrome, spleen-stomach yang deficiency syndrome and stomach yin deficiency syndrome, Five-Grinding Decoction, Center-Regulating Pill, Stomach-Replenishing Decoction can be selected for treatment respectively. Although the treatment method is different, it always takes harmonizing the stomach and lowering the counterflow of ,qi, as the principle.
