This paper summarizes professor CUI Xia's experience in using Shengma Biejia Tang (升麻鳖甲汤) to treat children with acute tonsillitis. In clinical practice, she finds that the tonsils may become swollen, enlarged and difficult to shrink if incomplete elimination of remnant pathogenic factors after palliation of acute tonsillitis protract for a prolonged period. For occurrence of repeated episodes of acute tonsillitis manifesting with swollen and enlarged tonsils but without obvious crimson and congestion of the pharyngeal isthmus, she holds that they are related to the overuse of antibiotics and Chinese materia medica with bitter-cold property, which causes the obstruction of yangqi, cold congealing and qi stagnation, failure to outthrust through and expel pathogenic factors and the remnant ones lurk deep inside. And she puts forward that warm medicinals should be used to warm and dissipate, smooth and dredge the qi activity of throat, selecting the prescription modified Shengma Biejia Tang of ,Synopsis of Golden Chamber, to treat, aiming for warming and resolving cold congealing with pungency, whereby dredging and smoothing qi activity and releasing latent pathogenic factors out. One case is attached for verification.
