Professor Fu Wei-min believes that the basic pathogenesis of migraine is the liver failing to disperse, the disharmony of ,qi, and blood, and the obstruction of brain collaterals. The treatment should be based on the liver. The key to the treatment is to soothe the liver, relieve depression and regulate ,qi, and blood, which runs through the whole treatment course. Professor Fu has divided migraine into the following seven syndrome types: liver depression and ,qi, stagnation syndrome, up-flaming of liver fire, liver yang transforming wind syndrome, liver meridian blood stasis syndrome, liver yang deficiency syndrome, liver blood deficiency syndrome, and liver-kidney yin deficiency syndrome. They are respectively treated by soothing liver and regulate ,qi, dredging collaterals and relieving pain; clearing liver and purging fire, cooling blood and relieving pain; pacifying the liver and subduing yang, eliminating wind and relieving pain; activating blood circulation, dredging orifices, removing blood stasis and relieving pain; warming the liver, dissipating cold, suppressing upward perversion of ,qi, to relieve pain; regulating blood and nourishing blood, softening the liver and relieving pain; tonifying the liver and kidney, nourishing yin and relieving pain. In addition, Professor Fu is good at using insect drugs in the treatment of migraine. He often uses meridian-guiding drugs returning to the liver and gallbladder channels, advocates emotional intervention combined with acupuncture and moxibustion.
