We summarized the clinical experience of Professor ZOU Yanqin, one of the National Chinese Medicine Masters, on the treatment of focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS). The pathological nature of FSGS is charactered by mixture of deficiency and excess. The main cause of this disease is derived from deficiency of lung, spleen and kidney, companied with dampness, dampheat, blood stasis and wind-pathogen. In clinical practice, Professor ZOU distinguishes deficiency syndrome and excess syndrome initially giving consideration to strengthening the body and expelling pathogenic factors. Improving deficiency and clearing off the toxins is Professor ZOU's main therapeutic strategy. Improvement treatment includes tonifying kidney, invigorating spleen and Qi. Clearance therapy consists of removing blood stasis and regulating collaterals, clearing heat and dampness, and dispersing lung.
