Tong Xiaolin's experience in the treatment of senile asthma with epimedium herb, morinda root and loquat leaf
Epimedium herb, morinda root and loquat leaf are the three drugs in a minor prescription used by Academician Tong Xiaolin to treat the senile asthma with the syndrome of lung and kidney deficiency, and good clinical effects have been achieved. The etiology of the disease is manifested by the invasion of superficies by the wind-cold-dampness pathogen, characterized as the root cause of kidney yang deficiency due to the body weakness as one gets old, and the disease is located in the lung, kidney, spleen and stomach, whose treatment should follow the principle of strengthening yang, tonifying the kidney and relieving cough. Academician Tong Xiaolin mostly uses epimedium herb and morinda root to regulate the disease state, to warmly invigorate the kidney yang and consolidate the body resistance, maintaining the kidneys’ inspiration function to relieve asthma. At the same time, he uses loquat leaves to treat the disease target, invigorating the lungs, resolving phlegm and relieving cough and asthma. Their commonly used dosage is 15 g respectively, and the dosage can be adjusted according to the condition in clinical practice, with the maximum dosage rising up to 30 g. Attention should be paid to the hormones effect of epimedium herb and morinda root.
