Some patients with chronic atrophic gastritis are complicated with gallbladder disease, leaving gallbladder and stomach to suffer from the same disease. Biliary diseases can also be turned into a pathogenic factor for stomach diseases, which is mainly responsible for promoting the prolonged progression of gastric mucosal lesions. Professor Xie Jingri advocated microcosmic syndrome differentiation based on gastroscopy and pathological manifestations. Chronic atrophic gastritis is characterized by a mixture of deficiency and excess: lack of nourishment in the stomach as root deficiency, phlegm turbidity, blood stasis and heat toxicity as disease symptoms, while conveyance and dispersion failure in liver as intermediary, which jointly lead to the pathogenesis of bile dysfunction and disharmony between spleen and stomach. The treatment is centered on dredging liver and activating qi flowing, focusing on invigorating gallbladder and draining viscera, and harmonizing stomach for descending adverse qi. Methods should be applied for clearing heat, resolving phlegm, dredging collaterals, promoting blood circulation, removing blood stasis and detoxification according to specific syndromes, bringing about a remarkable clinical effect. This paper introduces Professor Xie’s experience in the diagnosis and treatment of this disease, providing an innovative idea for the clinical treatment of chronic atrophic gastritis.
